📦 What Is This Product

Mezzanine Racking — Shelving That Is Its Own Mezzanine

Mezzanine racking (also called multi-tier shelving, multi-level picking rack, rack-supported mezzanine, walkway shelving or multi-story rack system) is a structural-rack system where shelving uprights serve double duty as both shelf supports AND mezzanine columns. Walkway grids slot between shelves at every upper tier, allowing operators to walk and pick directly from the shelf face on 2, 3 or 4 levels.

The most floor-efficient architecture for high-SKU hand-pick operations: spare parts, e-commerce small parcels, electronics components, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, apparel SKU storage. By eliminating the separate mezzanine + shelving structure, mezzanine racking saves 30–40% per usable m² and 7–10 days install time vs free-standing alternative.

⭐ Benefits

Why Mezzanine Racking Is the Standard for High-SKU Hand-Pick

Eight engineering and operational advantages that explain why mezzanine racking outperforms both pure shelving and free-standing mezzanines for spare-parts, e-commerce, electronics and apparel pick-pack centres.

💰

30–40% Cheaper / m²

Shelving uprights replace separate mezzanine columns — fewer steel pieces, fewer joints, faster install. USD 90–160/m² installed vs USD 140–240/m² for separate.

⬆️

Maximum SKU Density

4 tiers stacked in 8 m clear height yield 4× pick-face area on the same footprint. Standard architecture for 5,000+ SKU spare-parts and e-commerce DCs.

👷

Hand-Pick Optimised

No forklift on deck — eliminates fall risk, allows narrow 1.0 m aisles, reduces capex (no forklift truck purchase needed for upper tiers).

🪜

Walkway Grid Integration

Steel grating or chequer plate walkways slot directly between shelf rows — pickers walk between aisles at each tier. Anti-slip surface mandatory.

🔧

Modular Bolt-Together

100% bolt-together design — install in 10–14 days, reconfigure shelf level pitch in 30 minutes per bay. No on-site welding, no concrete pad foundations.

🛒

Integrated Conveyor Drops

Designed for conveyor / chute drop-zones on every tier — picked SKUs flow to ground-level despatch automatically. Cuts walking time by 40–60%.

📦

Tote / Bin / Carton Mix

Universal upright slot pattern at 25 mm or 50 mm pitch — supports plastic bins, cardboard tote, divider panel, dust shelf, label holder in any combination.

📐

Dual EN Compliance

Engineered to EN 15512 (rack) + EN 1993 (mezzanine walkway) — single supplier, single FEA report, single insurance documentation. Building permit-friendly.

🏷️ Product Types

Three Mezzanine Racking Configurations for Every Pick Operation

From lightweight shelving mezzanines for hand-pick SKUs to pallet-supported mezzanines for forklift-active decks and multi-level mega-DC stacks — match the base system, tier count and load rating to your SKU mix and building envelope.

Shelving Mezzanine Rack for hand-pick SKU storage

Shelving Mezzanine Rack

Boltless shelving uprights double as mezzanine columns — hand-pick access from foot level at every tier. 200–500 kg per shelf level, 500–800 kg/m² walkway. The most cost-efficient option for high-SKU, low-weight spare-parts and e-commerce picking operations.

Pallet Rack-Supported Mezzanine for forklift-active deck

Pallet Rack-Supported Mezzanine

Heavy-duty selective pallet racking uprights carry the mezzanine deck — forklift access on both ground and upper level, 1,000–1,500 kg per pallet position and 800–1,200 kg/m² walkway. The right choice when the upper tier needs pallet handling, not just hand picking.

Multi-Level Mezzanine 3-4 tier mega-DC pick tower

Multi-Level Mezzanine Rack

Stacked 3–4 levels in tall buildings (8+ m clear height). Dedicated stair tower, goods lift and chute drop zones between tiers. The mega-DC architecture for 50,000+ SKU e-commerce, 3PL fulfilment and aftermarket parts operations.

📌 Engineering Note: The defining cost-saver of a Shelving Mezzanine is that shelving uprights ARE the mezzanine columns — no extra structural steel. A Pallet Rack-Supported Mezzanine trades that saving for wider bays and forklift access on the upper deck. A Multi-Level Mezzanine is engineered as a stand-alone structure inside the building envelope and needs a fire and evacuation strategy per local code once occupant load exceeds 10 people per tier.

📐 Design Guide

How to Specify a Mezzanine Racking System in 3 Decisions

SKU profile, tier count and material flow drive 85% of total mezzanine racking project ROI. Get these three right BEFORE quoting — the cost-saver of integrated structure also means harder to reconfigure later.

1

SKU Profile — Tote, Carton or Loose?

Defines bay depth, beam pitch and pick face design. Profile your top 80% volume SKUs first.

  • Plastic totes 400×600 mm — 500 mm bay depth
  • Carton mix 200–500 mm — 600 mm bay depth
  • Bulk carton 500–800 mm — 900 mm bay depth
  • Loose / divider bin — 400 mm bay depth
2

Tier Count — Building Clear Height

Each tier consumes 2.2–2.5 m of clear height. Maximum 4 tiers practical; beyond that, switch to ASRS shuttle.

  • < 4.8 m — 1 tier only (ground)
  • 4.8 – 7.2 m — 2 tiers
  • 7.2 – 9.6 m — 3 tiers
  • 9.6 – 12 m — 4 tiers (high-bay)
3

Material Flow — Walking vs Chute

Pickers carry by hand from upper tiers? Or drop via chute / conveyor? Drops are mandatory above 2 tiers.

  • 2 tier — hand-carry to stair OK
  • 3+ tiers — chute or conveyor mandatory
  • Spiral chute — gentle drop, slow flow
  • Gravity-roller conveyor — fast, controlled

📌 Engineering Tip: Always allocate 15–20% of upper-tier area to chute / conveyor drop zones + safety clearance — not pure pick face. Failing to plan drop infrastructure forces operators to descend stairs for every pick batch, killing productivity by 35–50%. AME Rack provides chute + conveyor integration in BOM.

❓ FAQ — B2B Procurement

15 Procurement Questions Buyers Ask Before Placing a Mezzanine Racking Order

Answered for warehouse managers, e-commerce operations heads, spare-parts distributors, and procurement officers comparing 3–5 multi-tier rack suppliers. If your question is not covered, WhatsApp Lily at +86 188 2453 7792.

01What is mezzanine racking and how is it different from a regular mezzanine floor?
Mezzanine racking (also called multi-tier shelving, multi-level picking rack, rack-supported mezzanine or walkway shelving) is an integrated system where shelving uprights function as BOTH shelf supports AND mezzanine columns. A regular mezzanine has separate structural columns plus separate shelving — two systems, two budgets, two install crews. Mezzanine racking uses one system for both jobs: 30–40% cheaper per usable m², 7–10 days faster install, single supplier and single FEA report.
02How many tiers can I stack?
Standard 2–3 tier configurations are most common. 4-tier high-bay configurations are practical in tall buildings (10+ m clear). Beyond 4 tiers, gravity-based hand picking becomes inefficient — switch to vertical lift module (VLM) or mini-load ASRS. Each tier requires 2.2–2.5 m head clearance plus walkway + sprinkler clearance.
03Can I drive a forklift on the upper tier?
No — mezzanine racking is for hand-pick only. Walkway grating handles 500–700 kg/m² UDL (pedestrian load) but cannot support concentrated forklift wheel loads. If you need forklift access on the upper tier, use H-steel structural mezzanine + selective pallet rack instead — different product, 2–3× the capex.
04How do I move stock between tiers without a forklift?
Three methods: (1) Manual stair carry — fine for 2-tier light operations. (2) Vertical reciprocating conveyor (VRC) / goods lift — 500–1,500 kg capacity, USD 18,000–35,000. (3) Spiral or gravity-roller chute — pickers drop totes / cartons to ground despatch automatically. For 3+ tier operations, VRC or chute is mandatory.
05What is the load capacity per shelf and per walkway?
Standard boltless: 200–350 kg per shelf level, walkway 500 kg/m² UDL. Longspan: 350–500 kg per shelf level, walkway up to 700 kg/m² UDL. Walkway load is total pedestrian + tote / cart traffic. We do NOT recommend storing palletised loads on walkway grating — use shelf face only.
06What is the MOQ — can I order a small mezzanine rack?
Minimum project is 100 m² (≈ 1 × 20HQ container). Smaller projects accepted with 18–25% surcharge due to fabrication minimum batch and engineering overhead. For single-tier shelving below 250 m², we recommend pure boltless shelving instead — much cheaper per m² without mezzanine structure.
07How long is the lead time from PO to ready-for-shipment?
Standard boltless 2-tier: 28 days. Longspan 2-3 tier: 32 days. Carton flow with chute integration: 40 days (chute custom-fab adds time). 4-tier high-bay: 40 days. Fire-rated intumescent coating: add 5 days. Engineering iteration before fabrication usually adds 7–14 days.
08What payment terms do you accept?
Standard: 30% T/T deposit on PO confirmation, 70% balance against B/L copy before vessel sails. Alternative: 100% irrevocable L/C at sight from a top-50 bank. For enterprise customers with 3+ orders, OA 30/60 against credit insurance (Sinosure / Coface).
09Is your mezzanine racking compliant with EN 15512 + EN 1993?
Yes — and this dual compliance is the killer feature. Standard mezzanine racking from cheap suppliers is engineered only to EN 15512 (rack code) — meaning the walkway component is NOT formally certified, creating insurance and fire-marshal headaches. AME Rack designs to EN 15512 (rack) + EN 1993 (walkway / steel structure) + AISC 360 + AS 4084. Single stamped FEA report covers both systems.
10What steel grade do you use?
Standard: Q235B cold-rolled coil for upright and beam. High-bay 4-tier and heavy-duty longspan: Q345B (yield ≥345 MPa). Walkway grating: hot-dipped galvanised 3 mm or 4 mm bar grating. Cold-storage variant: full HDG 80–120 μm. Steel sourced from Tier-1 Chinese mills (Baosteel, Shagang, Hesteel). Full MTC provided.
11Can you integrate carton flow / gravity roller for FIFO picking?
Yes. Carton flow mezzanine is one of our standard variants — inclined gravity roller or wheel-flow lanes for FIFO carton picking, integrated with chute drops at every tier. Used widely in e-commerce and pharma where SKU expiry / batch date matters. Roller flow lanes engineered for 250–400 kg per lane.
12Do you provide fire-rated mezzanine racking?
Yes. 60-minute fire-rating via intumescent coating per EN 13501 / ASTM E119, plus optional cement-board ceiling and rated stair enclosure. Required when occupant load > 10 people (most multi-tier pick operations exceed this). Fire-rating adds 15–22% to base price. Sprinkler clearance NFPA 13 / EN 12845 maintained throughout.
13How much cheaper are you than European brands?
For equivalent EN 15512 + EN 1993 spec, AME Rack direct factory pricing is typically 30–45% below European brand-name suppliers (SSI Schäfer Bito, Constructor, Mecalux, AR Racking) and 25–35% below North American brands (Steel King, Mecalux US, Frazier, Cubic Designs). We own the 15,500 m² plant outright and procure steel via annual mill contracts.
14Do you provide installation supervision?
Optional, USD 350/day + travel/visa. Recommended for first-time projects and 4-tier installs. Mezzanine racking install is more sequential than free-standing mezzanine — wrong erection order makes later tiers impossible. AME Rack supervisor ensures correct tier-by-tier sequence + bolt torque + alignment. Typical 800 m² 2-tier needs 7–10 days; 4-tier 14–18 days.
15What after-sales support do you provide for international buyers?
Free part list with every order for future expansion (3-year price-lock on commodity components). Spare-parts shipment within 14 days by air or sea. Re-engineering service if you add tiers or expand bay count — we update your FEA report and drawings free for 3 years post-installation. WhatsApp / email response within 4 working hours, Mon–Sat.
