📦 What Is This Product

H Steel Mezzanine — Built Like a Building, Not a Shelf

An H-steel mezzanine (also called H-beam mezzanine, hot-rolled steel platform, heavy-duty mezzanine, structural steel mezzanine or industrial multi-tier floor) uses hot-rolled H-section (or I-section / IPE / HEA / HEB / HEM) for columns and primary beams — exactly the same structural system used in commercial buildings. The upper deck is designed for heavy live loads that cold-formed mezzanines cannot handle.

Standard for operations placing pallet racks on the upper tier, driving forklifts on the deck, parking vehicles, hosting heavy machinery, or installing mini-load ASRS / shuttle aisles above ground level. The structural overspec also provides better seismic and dynamic-load performance than light cold-formed alternatives.

⭐ Benefits

Why H-Steel Mezzanine Beats Cold-Formed for Industrial Use

Eight engineering advantages that justify the premium over cold-formed mezzanines — wherever you need to put pallet rack, forklift traffic, machinery or vehicle weight on the upper tier.

🏗️

Building-Grade Strength

Hot-rolled H-beam columns and main beams sized like commercial-building structure. Carries 1,000–3,000 kg/m² UDL — 3–6× more than cold-formed mezzanines.

🚛

Forklift on Upper Deck

Engineered for electric forklift traffic (up to 3 T) on the upper tier — moves pallets directly, no manual handling. Standard for modern multi-level DCs.

🏭

Pallet Rack on Mezzanine

Spec 1,500 kg/m² UDL or higher to install full selective / VNA pallet rack on the upper deck. Multiplies storage density without expanding building.

⬆️

Tall Building 6 Tiers

Wider H-beam column spacing (up to 9 m) enables 2–6 tier vertical stacking inside 18+ m clear-height buildings. Maximises cube utilisation in mega-DCs.

🌍

Seismic Performance

Hot-rolled steel ductility outperforms cold-formed under cyclic seismic loading. Dynamic FEA per EN 1998 / IBC / NCh 2369 stamped for Zone 3–4 sites.

🔥

Fire-Rating Friendly

Heavier steel sections take longer to lose strength in fire — easier to achieve 60 / 90 / 120 minute ratings with thinner intumescent coating vs cold-formed.

🔧

Bolted EN 1090 EXC3

EN 1090-2 EXC3 execution class with welded shop-built panel + on-site bolt assembly. Welder qualification per ISO 9606-1, weld inspection per ISO 5817 Class B.

📐

Long Column Spacing

9 m × 6 m typical column grid (vs 4 m × 6 m for cold-formed) — fewer columns mean cleaner aisle pattern, easier WMS layout, lower forklift collision risk.

📐 Design Guide

How to Specify an H-Steel Mezzanine in 3 Decisions

Load profile, column spacing and foundation strategy drive 85% of total project cost. H-steel mezzanines are building-grade structures — design discipline saves money long-term.

1

Load Profile — UDL + Point + Dynamic

H-steel mezzanines see all three load types — design for the controlling case.

  • UDL — uniform load from storage / shelving
  • Point — pallet rack baseplate, machinery foot
  • Dynamic — forklift wheel impact + braking
  • Spec controlling case + 20% reserve
2

Column Spacing — Density vs Steel Weight

Wider spacing = cleaner deck layout but heavier beams. Most-economical grid balances forklift aisle pattern with steel tonnage.

  • 4 × 6 m — light-duty, cheap steel
  • 6 × 9 m — standard industrial sweet spot
  • 9 × 12 m — clean deck for ASRS / shuttle
  • 12 × 18 m — bespoke long-span fabrication
3

Foundation — Slab vs Pad

H-steel point loads almost always exceed slab capacity — pad foundations are usually mandatory.

  • < 8 T per column — existing slab may work
  • 8–20 T — 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.6 m pad foundation
  • 20–40 T — 2.0 × 2.0 × 0.8 m pad
  • > 40 T — piled foundation engineer required
📊 Intended Use → Recommended UDL + H-Beam Section (per EN 1991 imposed loads)Industrial loads exceed standard EN 1991-1-1 Category C — over-spec is mandatory

📌 Engineering Tip: For forklift-on-deck applications, always specify concrete-topped steel checker plate (40–60 mm concrete bonded to deck) — eliminates wheel vibration that loosens bolted connections over time. Adds 5–8% to capex but cuts maintenance to near-zero over 15-year service life.

✅ Pick H-Steel When…

Forklift, pallet rack, machinery on deck

You need to put forklifts, pallet racks, heavy machinery, vehicles or dynamic equipment on the upper tier. Cold-formed mezzanines cannot handle these loads safely.

⚠️ Skip H-Steel When…

Light storage + manual pick only

If you only need light shelving, document archive or pick-pack workstations, cold-formed mezzanine is 40–60% cheaper. Don't over-engineer.

↔️ Pick Concrete Add-On When…

Permanent installation, > 3,000 kg/m²

For extreme industrial loads (forging press, plating tank, cleanroom HVAC) consider full reinforced concrete slab — heavier, permanent, but unlimited load.

🔁 H-Steel + Cold-Formed Combo

Mixed-use buildings

H-steel for forklift-active areas; cold-formed mezzanine for office, archive, light storage. Same project, two structural classes — 30% blended savings.

❓ FAQ — B2B Procurement

15 Procurement Questions Buyers Ask Before Placing an H-Steel Mezzanine Order

Answered for plant engineers, facility managers, structural consultants and procurement officers comparing 3–5 heavy-duty mezzanine suppliers. If your question is not covered, WhatsApp Lily at +86 188 2453 7792.

01What is an H-steel structure mezzanine and how does it differ from cold-formed mezzanine?
An H-steel structure mezzanine (also called H-beam mezzanine, hot-rolled steel platform, heavy-duty mezzanine or structural steel mezzanine) is built with hot-rolled H-section (HEA / HEB / HEM / IPE) columns and primary beams — same structural system as commercial buildings. Cold-formed mezzanines use thin-wall cold-rolled C-section. H-steel handles 1,000–3,000 kg/m² UDL vs cold-formed maximum 1,000 kg/m²; supports forklifts and pallet rack on the deck; service life 25–40 years vs 15–20 years.
02Can I drive a forklift on the upper deck?
Yes — that's a primary use case. Standard 1,000 kg/m² H-steel mezzanine supports 1.5 T electric forklift; heavy-duty 2,000 kg/m² supports 3 T electric forklift; industrial 3,000 kg/m² supports 3 T diesel forklift. We strongly recommend concrete-topped steel checker plate (40–60 mm concrete bonded to deck) for forklift applications — eliminates wheel vibration that loosens bolted connections over time.
03Can I install pallet rack on the H-steel mezzanine?
Yes. Standard 1,500 kg/m² UDL spec supports light selective pallet rack on the upper tier. 2,000–3,000 kg/m² supports heavy-duty pallet rack including VNA tall towers. We engineer the column grid to align with rack upright spacing for direct load transfer — most efficient combination. AME Rack supplies the rack also; one-stop design.
04Do I need pad foundations under each column?
Almost always. Standard 150 mm reinforced slab handles ~8 T per column max; H-steel point loads typically reach 15–40 T per column. Standard pad: 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.6 m reinforced concrete for 8–20 T, 2.0 × 2.0 × 0.8 m for 20–40 T. Pad construction cost USD 800–1,500 per column; must be done before mezzanine erection. AME Rack supplies pad-bar drawing with FEA report.
05What load capacity (UDL) should I specify?
Match to intended use: 1,000 kg/m² for shelving + light pick, 1,500 kg/m² for pallet rack on mezzanine, 2,000 kg/m² for electric forklift on deck, 3,000 kg/m² for heavy machinery / mini-load ASRS. Over-spec wastes capex but is much cheaper than retrofit later — recommend speccing one tier up if future use is uncertain.
06How many tiers can you stack?
Standard 2–3 tier configurations are most common. Multi-tier 4–6 level mezzanines are engineered for tall buildings (15+ m clear height) — used in mega-DC architecture. Each tier needs dedicated inter-tier bracing per EN 1998. Standard stair tower + 1–2 hydraulic goods lifts integrated for vertical material movement.
07What is the MOQ — can I order a small project?
Minimum project is 100 m² (≈ 1 × 20HQ container). Smaller orders accepted with 18–25% surcharge due to fabrication minimum batch and engineering overhead. Hot-rolled sections longer than 12 m may require flat-rack shipment instead of container — adds USD 800–1,500 ocean freight.
08How long is the lead time from PO to ready-for-shipment?
Standard 1,000 kg/m²: 25 days. Heavy-duty 2,000 kg/m²: 30 days. Industrial 3,000 kg/m²: 35 days. Multi-tier 4–6 level or fire-rated: 35 days. Engineering iteration (soil report, slab survey, pad design, customer drawing review) before fabrication starts usually adds 14–21 days.
09What payment terms do you accept?
Standard: 30% T/T deposit on PO confirmation, 70% balance against B/L copy before vessel sails. Alternative: 100% irrevocable L/C at sight from a top-50 bank. For enterprise customers with 3+ orders, OA 30/60 against credit insurance (Sinosure / Coface).
10Are your H-steel mezzanines compliant with EN 1993 / AISC 360 / EN 1090?
Yes. Engineered to EN 1993 (Eurocode 3 — EU), AISC 360 (US), AS 4100 (AU/NZ). Fabrication per EN 1090-2 EXC3 (commercial building execution class). Welders qualified per ISO 9606-1, weld inspection per ISO 5817 Class B. CE marking available for EU buyers. Stamped FEA reports run in RFEM 5 / ETABS / SAP2000 by registered PE.
11What steel grade do you use?
Standard: S355JR (equivalent to Q345B), yield ≥355 MPa, Charpy V-notch ≥27J at -40°C. Hot-rolled sections sourced from Tier-1 mills (Baosteel, Shagang, Hesteel, ArcelorMittal) under annual contracts. Full mill test certificates (MTC) and traceability per EN 10204 3.1 provided with every shipment.
12Can you handle seismic-zone engineering?
Yes — H-steel ductility outperforms cold-formed under cyclic seismic loading. We deliver dynamic FEA (modal + response spectrum + time-history) per EN 1998 / ASCE 7 / NCh 2369 for Zone 3–4 regions. Projects completed in Chile, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, USA, New Zealand. FEA stamped by registered PE on request.
13Do you provide fire-rated mezzanines?
Yes. R60 / R90 / R120 fire-rating via intumescent coating per EN 13501 / ASTM E119, plus cement-board ceiling and rated stair enclosure for full compartmentation. Required in many EU and US jurisdictions when occupant load exceeds 10 people or when used for hazardous-storage operations. Fire-rating adds 15–22% to base price.
14How much cheaper are you than European brands?
For equivalent EN 1993 + EN 1090 EXC3 spec, AME Rack direct factory pricing is typically 25–40% below European brand-name suppliers (Constructor, AR Racking, Mecalux, Stow, Cornix) and 20–30% below North American brands (Cubic Designs, Steele Solutions, PWI, Wildeck). We own the 15,500 m² plant outright and procure hot-rolled sections via annual mill contracts.
15Do you provide installation supervision?
Strongly recommended for H-steel mezzanines — USD 200/day + travel/visa. Hot-rolled steel installation requires precise column baseplate alignment (±5 mm) and bolt torque control (calibrated wrench per EN 1090-2). Typical 1,500 m² 2-tier H-steel mezzanine needs 14–21 days supervision; multi-tier 4–6 level projects 21–35 days. Local crew handles labour; AME Rack supervisor ensures sequence + torque + alignment.
