🏗️ Double Deep Pallet Racking

Double Deep Pallet Racking — +35% Density with Near-Full Selectivity

The smartest middle ground between selective and drive-in. Two pallets deep per side gives 35% more positions on the same floor area — with 50% direct pallet access. Forklift with double-deep reach attachment (pantograph) handles both positions from a single aisle. AME Rack manufactures EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI MH16 compliant systems exported to 65+ countries.

📦 What Is This Product

Double Deep Racking — Two Pallets Behind Each Other Per Side

Double deep pallet racking (also called 2-deep pallet rack, deep reach racking or reach-in racking) stores two pallets in line behind each other on each side of the aisle. The rear pallet is accessed by a forklift fitted with a pantograph (telescopic reach) attachment that extends the forks an extra 800–1,200 mm into the bay.

Used wherever selectivity loss of 50% is acceptable in exchange for 35% more pallet positions: cold storage, FMCG, 3PL slow-mover reserve, paint and lubricant distributors with medium SKU count (typically 50–500 SKUs in the racking zone with 4+ pallets per SKU).

⭐ Benefits

Why Double Deep Racking Is the Best Density Upgrade from Selective

Eight engineering and operational advantages that explain why double deep is the most-installed semi-selective racking system in mid-volume FMCG, cold storage and 3PL operations.

📦

+35% Density

Add 35% more pallet positions to the same floor area vs selective racking — by eliminating one cross aisle for every two storage rows.

🔁

50% Pallet Access

Front pallet 100% accessible like selective; rear pallet accessed via pantograph fork. Far better selectivity than drive-in or shuttle racks.

💰

Low Capex Premium

Rack frame costs only 10–15% more than selective per pallet position — primarily extra beam length. ROI typically 12–18 months on rented floor area.

❄️

Cold-Storage Friendly

Reduces cooled / frozen volume by 25–30% vs selective — significant energy saving in -25°C frozen DCs and 2–8°C chilled rooms.

🚛

Standard Reach Truck

Works with any reach truck retrofitted with pantograph attachment — no specialised VNA, shuttle or AGV equipment needed.

➡️

FIFO Per Row Pair

Behaves as FIFO at the row-pair level: load behind, retrieve in front (when both pallets are same SKU). True FIFO requires careful slotting.

📐

Same Rack Standards

Engineered to identical EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI MH16 codes as selective rack — no specialised compliance documentation, easy insurance approval.

🌍

Compact Shipping

Component nesting identical to selective rack — average 1,700–2,000 pallet positions per 40HQ container.

📐 Design Guide

How to Specify a Double Deep Layout in 3 Decisions

SKU slotting strategy, pantograph reach distance and aisle width drive 85% of total double deep project ROI. Get these three right before sizing uprights.

1

SKU Slotting — Same-SKU Behind?

The single biggest design decision. Same-SKU 2-deep behaves like FIFO; mixed-SKU 2-deep forces double-handling whenever rear pallet is needed.

  • Same-SKU 2-deep — true FIFO, no double-handle
  • Mixed-SKU 2-deep — 25–40% double-handle penalty
  • Rule: ≥4 pallets per SKU → same-SKU 2-deep works
  • Slow movers / unique SKUs → use selective row
2

Pantograph Reach Distance

The forklift reach attachment must extend 800–1,200 mm beyond standard fork to reach the rear pallet. Verify before buying rack.

  • EUR 1200×800 pallets — 900 mm reach
  • US GMA 1219×1016 pallets — 1,100 mm reach
  • CHEP 1165×1165 pallets — 1,200 mm reach
  • Allow 75 mm flue between back-to-back pallets
3

Aisle Width — Reach Truck + Pantograph

Pantograph reach truck needs same aisle width as standard reach truck — but allow 100 mm extra for safety margin during deep-position deposit.

  • Standard reach truck — 2.9 m aisle (DD: 3.0 m)
  • Articulated reach — 2.5 m aisle (DD: 2.6 m)
  • Wider aisles = faster cycle but less density
  • Use spotter mirror on rack frame for safety

✅ Pick Double Deep When…

4–20 pallets per SKU, 50–500 SKUs

You want the biggest density gain (+35%) at the smallest capex premium (+10–15%) — without dropping below 50% selectivity. Sweet spot for FMCG and 3PL.

⚠️ Skip Double Deep When…

Reach truck capex unjustifiable

If you don't already own reach trucks and your project doesn't justify USD 12–18K per truck for pantograph attachment, stay with selective. Capex math fails below 800 pallet positions.

↔️ Pick Push-Back Instead When…

4–6 pallet lanes, LIFO OK

Push-back gives more density per lane (4–6 vs 2 deep) and works with any forklift — but capex is 4× higher than double deep and access is LIFO only.

🔁 Double Deep + Selective Combo

Most-installed hybrid layout

Double deep for fast-mover top 20% volume SKUs; selective for the long-tail. 25% blended density gain with zero handling penalty. Standard in most 3PL DCs.

How AME Rack Builds Double Deep Racks — 6-Step Production Flow

Owned 15,500 m² Dongguan factory. Steel coil enters one end, container-loaded racking exits the other. Every step in-house — no outsourcing, no hidden margins.

Step 1 🛠️

CNC Punching & Cutting

4 high-speed CNC punching lines (Amada / Yawei) cut and perforate uprights from 2.0–2.5 mm Q235B / Q345B cold-rolled steel coil. Hole pattern EN 15512 slot at 50 mm pitch, tolerance ±0.15 mm.

Step 2 🌀

Roll-Forming

15 parallel roll-forming lines run continuously for upright sections, box-section step beams, row spacers, and bracing members. Dedicated lines per cross-section avoid changeover delay.

Step 3

Robotic Welding

Panasonic / Yaskawa robotic MIG welding for upright frame assembly (uprights + horizontal/diagonal bracing). Full-perimeter weld for beam end-connector to box-beam. ISO 5817 Class B weld inspection.

Step 4 🧪

Acid Pickling & Phosphating

7-stage pre-treatment: alkaline degrease → rinse → acid pickle → rinse → zinc-phosphate → rinse → DI rinse. Surface prep directly affects powder-coat adhesion (≥6N/cm cross-cut test).

Step 5 🎨

Powder Coating or HDG

Powder coat: 60–100 μm DFT epoxy-polyester, AME Rack orange or RAL custom. HDG: 80–120 μm zinc bath dip per ISO 1461 for cold-storage and outdoor environments.

❓ FAQ — B2B Procurement

15 Procurement Questions Buyers Ask Before Placing a Double Deep Rack Order

Answered for facility managers, supply chain heads, and procurement officers comparing 3–5 racking suppliers. If your question is not covered, WhatsApp Lily at +86 188 2453 7792.

01What is double deep pallet racking and how is it different from selective?
Double deep pallet racking (also called 2-deep pallet rack, deep reach racking, reach-in racking or pantograph pallet rack) stores two pallets in line behind each other on each side of the aisle. The front pallet is accessed exactly like selective rack; the rear pallet requires a forklift fitted with a pantograph (telescopic reach) attachment that extends the forks 800–1,200 mm into the bay. You gain +35% density vs selective at the cost of 50% direct pallet access.
02Do I need a special forklift for double deep racking?
Yes — you need a reach truck fitted with a pantograph attachment. The pantograph telescopes the forks 800 mm (EUR pallets), 1,100 mm (US GMA) or 1,200 mm (CHEP) further than standard. Cost is typically USD 12,000–18,000 per truck retrofit. Major brands (Toyota, Linde, Crown, Hyster, Jungheinrich, Yale, Mitsubishi) all offer factory or aftermarket pantograph. Verify compatibility with your existing trucks before placing rack order.
03Can I run FIFO with double deep racking?
Yes if you slot the same SKU in both deep positions (rear pallet placed first, front pallet placed second; retrieval reverses the order — FIFO at the pallet pair level). If you mix two different SKUs in the same lane, you lose FIFO and incur double-handling penalty whenever the rear pallet is needed. Standard practice: same-SKU per lane pair, never mix.
04What density gain can I really expect vs selective racking?
+30 to +35% more pallet positions on the same floor area, depending on building geometry. The gain comes from eliminating one cross aisle for every two storage rows. In an optimised hybrid layout (65% double deep + 35% selective for long-tail SKUs), blended gain is typically +25% with zero handling penalty.
05What is the MOQ — can I order less than a full container?
The minimum order quantity for double-deep racking is 10 sets, but we recommend purchasing from a 20GP container for lower shipping costs. If you purchase goods from other suppliers in China, we can also help you arrange for the racking to be shipped to those suppliers via LCL (Less than Container Load) shipping, which can also save on freight costs.
06How long is the lead time from PO to ready-for-shipment?
Standard powder-coated double deep: 22 days after deposit received. Heavy-duty 2T variant: 28 days. Hot-dip galvanised cold-storage: 32–35 days (HDG dipping cycle adds 7–10 days). 304 stainless: 40–45 days. Lead time is 2 days longer than selective due to extra row-spacer fabrication.
07What payment terms do you accept for B2B buyers?
Standard terms: 30% T/T deposit on PO confirmation, 70% balance against B/L copy before vessel sails. Alternative: 100% irrevocable L/C at sight from a top-50 bank. For repeat customers with 3+ orders, we also offer OA 30/60 against credit insurance (Sinosure / Coface).
08Is your double deep rack compliant with EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI MH16?
Yes. Double deep designs use the same engineering basis as selective pallet rack — engineered to EN 15512 (EU), AS 4084 (AU/NZ), RMI MH16.1 / ANSI MH16.1 (US/Canada). Stamped FEA calculation reports run in RFEM 5 / ETABS provided on request. Insurance underwriters treat double deep identically to selective for compliance.
09What steel grade do you use?
Standard: Q235B cold-rolled coil (yield ≥235 MPa) for light/medium duty. Heavy-duty 2T and cold-storage: Q345B (yield ≥345 MPa, Charpy V-notch ≥27J at -40°C — mandatory for cold-storage and seismic Zone 3–4). Steel sourced from Tier-1 Chinese mills (Baosteel, Shagang, Hesteel). Full mill test certificates (MTC) provided.
10How do I slot my SKUs across double deep and selective?
Rule of thumb: ≥4 pallets per SKU goes into double deep (same-SKU per lane), 1–3 pallets stays in selective. AME Rack provides free SKU-slotting analysis with every quote — send your ABC report (Excel with SKU code + pallet count per SKU). Our consultants will return a mixed-layout recommendation maximising density without handling penalty.
11Do you supply heavy-duty 2T double deep for glass bottle / ceramic tile pallets?
Yes. Heavy-duty 2T variant uses reinforced 120×95×2.5 mm upright + 130×50×2.0 mm box beam + double-pin safety lock. Q345B steel, M20 chemical anchor bolts, full FEA validation for 2,000 kg pallet weight at full pantograph deposit. Used by major Latin American and Asian beverage and ceramic distributors.
12Can you handle seismic-zone engineering?
Yes. We have completed double deep projects in Chile (NCh 2369), Mexico (NTC-DS), Indonesia (SNI 1726), Saudi Arabia (SBC 301), Philippines (NSCP), Peru (E.030), Colombia (NSR-10) and US zones (IBC). FEA reports run in RFEM 5 / ETABS and stamped by registered PE on request. Heavier bracing and larger baseplates included in seismic-zone quotation by default.
13How much cheaper are you than European / North American brands?
For equivalent EN 15512 + RMI MH16 spec, AME Rack direct factory pricing is typically 30–45% below European brand-name suppliers (SSI Schäfer, Mecalux, Stow, Polypal) and 25–35% below North American brands (Steel King, Interlake, Frazier). We own the 15,500 m² plant outright and procure steel via annual mill contracts — no trader or distributor margin.
14Do you supply matching accessories — wire deck, column guards, signs?
Yes. Full accessory range in-house: 50×100 mm wire deck (welded), 16-gauge steel deck, pallet support bars, end-of-aisle column guards (yellow powder coat or HDG), upright protectors, row spacers, pallet stoppers (mandatory for double deep — bolt-on rear stopper at 2nd-deep position), flue spacers, anchors and aluminium load capacity signs.
15What after-sales support do you provide for international buyers?
Free part list with every order for future expansion (3-year price-lock on commodity components). Spare-parts shipment within 14 days by air or sea. Re-engineering service if you reconfigure your warehouse — we update your FEA report and drawings free for 3 years post-installation. WhatsApp / email response within 4 working hours, Mon–Sat.
