Double Deep Pallet Racking — +35% Density with Near-Full Selectivity
The smartest middle ground between selective and drive-in. Two pallets deep per side gives 35% more positions on the same floor area — with 50% direct pallet access. Forklift with double-deep reach attachment (pantograph) handles both positions from a single aisle. AME Rack manufactures EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI MH16 compliant systems exported to 65+ countries.
Double Deep Racking — Two Pallets Behind Each Other Per Side
Double deep pallet racking (also called 2-deep pallet rack, deep reach racking or reach-in racking) stores two pallets in line behind each other on each side of the aisle. The rear pallet is accessed by a forklift fitted with a pantograph (telescopic reach) attachment that extends the forks an extra 800–1,200 mm into the bay.
Used wherever selectivity loss of 50% is acceptable in exchange for 35% more pallet positions: cold storage, FMCG, 3PL slow-mover reserve, paint and lubricant distributors with medium SKU count (typically 50–500 SKUs in the racking zone with 4+ pallets per SKU).
Why Double Deep Racking Is the Best Density Upgrade from Selective
Eight engineering and operational advantages that explain why double deep is the most-installed semi-selective racking system in mid-volume FMCG, cold storage and 3PL operations.
+35% Density
Add 35% more pallet positions to the same floor area vs selective racking — by eliminating one cross aisle for every two storage rows.
50% Pallet Access
Front pallet 100% accessible like selective; rear pallet accessed via pantograph fork. Far better selectivity than drive-in or shuttle racks.
Low Capex Premium
Rack frame costs only 10–15% more than selective per pallet position — primarily extra beam length. ROI typically 12–18 months on rented floor area.
Cold-Storage Friendly
Reduces cooled / frozen volume by 25–30% vs selective — significant energy saving in -25°C frozen DCs and 2–8°C chilled rooms.
Standard Reach Truck
Works with any reach truck retrofitted with pantograph attachment — no specialised VNA, shuttle or AGV equipment needed.
FIFO Per Row Pair
Behaves as FIFO at the row-pair level: load behind, retrieve in front (when both pallets are same SKU). True FIFO requires careful slotting.
Same Rack Standards
Engineered to identical EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI MH16 codes as selective rack — no specialised compliance documentation, easy insurance approval.
Compact Shipping
Component nesting identical to selective rack — average 1,700–2,000 pallet positions per 40HQ container.

How to Specify a Double Deep Layout in 3 Decisions
SKU slotting strategy, pantograph reach distance and aisle width drive 85% of total double deep project ROI. Get these three right before sizing uprights.
SKU Slotting — Same-SKU Behind?
The single biggest design decision. Same-SKU 2-deep behaves like FIFO; mixed-SKU 2-deep forces double-handling whenever rear pallet is needed.
- Same-SKU 2-deep — true FIFO, no double-handle
- Mixed-SKU 2-deep — 25–40% double-handle penalty
- Rule: ≥4 pallets per SKU → same-SKU 2-deep works
- Slow movers / unique SKUs → use selective row
Pantograph Reach Distance
The forklift reach attachment must extend 800–1,200 mm beyond standard fork to reach the rear pallet. Verify before buying rack.
- EUR 1200×800 pallets — 900 mm reach
- US GMA 1219×1016 pallets — 1,100 mm reach
- CHEP 1165×1165 pallets — 1,200 mm reach
- Allow 75 mm flue between back-to-back pallets
Aisle Width — Reach Truck + Pantograph
Pantograph reach truck needs same aisle width as standard reach truck — but allow 100 mm extra for safety margin during deep-position deposit.
- Standard reach truck — 2.9 m aisle (DD: 3.0 m)
- Articulated reach — 2.5 m aisle (DD: 2.6 m)
- Wider aisles = faster cycle but less density
- Use spotter mirror on rack frame for safety
| Pallets per SKU | Recommended Slot | Density Gain | Double-Handle Risk | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 pallet | Selective only | 0% | None | Unique SKUs, samples |
| 2–3 pallets | Selective preferred | 0% | Low if mixed | Slow movers, long-tail |
| 4–8 pallets | Double deep, same-SKU | +35% | Very low | Standard FMCG, FIFO OK |
| 9–20 pallets | Double deep or push-back | +35% / +50% | Negligible | Bulk SKUs, beverage |
| 21+ pallets | Drive-in or shuttle | +65 / +80% | — | Cold storage mega-SKU |

| Reconfigurability | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ |
| Best For | 4–20 pal/SKU, mid SKU | Mixed SKU, <500/SKU | ≤50 SKU, >20 pal/SKU | 4–6 pal LIFO mix | FIFO + max density |
4–20 pallets per SKU, 50–500 SKUs
You want the biggest density gain (+35%) at the smallest capex premium (+10–15%) — without dropping below 50% selectivity. Sweet spot for FMCG and 3PL.
Reach truck capex unjustifiable
If you don't already own reach trucks and your project doesn't justify USD 12–18K per truck for pantograph attachment, stay with selective. Capex math fails below 800 pallet positions.
4–6 pallet lanes, LIFO OK
Push-back gives more density per lane (4–6 vs 2 deep) and works with any forklift — but capex is 4× higher than double deep and access is LIFO only.
Most-installed hybrid layout
Double deep for fast-mover top 20% volume SKUs; selective for the long-tail. 25% blended density gain with zero handling penalty. Standard in most 3PL DCs.
Real Double Deep Installations Around the World
Three recent projects across three continents — 3PL FMCG, cold-storage retailer DC, and beverage producer. Each shows the rack mix, SKU slotting strategy, lead time and verified ROI metric.

Madrid 3PL DC — Double Deep + Selective Hybrid
Pan-European 3PL needed +25% density on existing footprint without expanding building. We engineered 65% double deep (fast movers) + 35% selective (long tail) hybrid — same powder-coat finish, single supplier. Pantograph attachment retrofitted to existing Linde reach trucks at USD 14K per truck. Payback in 11 months on rented floor area savings.

Incheon Cold Storage DC — HDG Double Deep -25°C
Major Korean retailer converted legacy selective frozen DC to double deep HDG. Hot-dip galvanised 100 μm finish, Q345B steel with -40°C Charpy. Frozen volume cut 28% — annual refrigeration energy saving of 142,000 kWh fully offset the rack capex within 18 months. Zero condensation corrosion after 3 winters.

Bogotá Beverage Bottler — Heavy-Duty 2T Double Deep
Soft-drink producer needed dense buffer for glass-bottle pallets averaging 1,800 kg gross. Heavy-duty 2T double deep with reinforced upright + double-pin safety. NSR-10 seismic engineering with FEA reports stamped by Colombian PE. Glass pallet damage rate dropped from 0.8% to 0.06% vs floor stacking.
How AME Rack Builds Double Deep Racks — 6-Step Production Flow
Owned 15,500 m² Dongguan factory. Steel coil enters one end, container-loaded racking exits the other. Every step in-house — no outsourcing, no hidden margins.
