📖 What Is Selective Pallet Racking?

The Standard Warehouse Pallet Rack Architecture, Explained

Selective pallet racking (also called adjustable pallet racking, APR, single-deep racking or simply pallet racking system) is the most widely deployed industrial storage system in the world — used in distribution centres, manufacturing plants, cold storage warehouses and 3PL hubs from Shenzhen to São Paulo.

Each pallet position is independently accessible by forklift — load and retrieve any pallet without disturbing the others. This 100% direct access makes selective pallet racking the universal choice for warehouses with high SKU variety, fast inventory rotation, or mixed pallet weights.

The system consists of upright frames (vertical columns connected by bracing), load beams (horizontal box-section profiles spanning between uprights), safety pins or locking clips, and optional decking (wire mesh, steel panel or particle board). Beams can be repositioned vertically in 50mm or 75mm slot pitch — the source of the "adjustable" name.

AME Rack manufactures selective pallet rack systems to EN 15512, AS 4084, RMI MH16 and FEM 10.2.02 standards, with stamped FEA reports issued free with every project.

10 Parts of a Selective Pallet Rack System

Every selective pallet rack is assembled from a standard set of 10 components. Knowing the names speeds up your specifications, parts ordering and maintenance — and helps procurement teams compare apples-to-apples across suppliers.

Selective pallet rack components diagram showing upright frame, beam, baseplate and accessories
01

Upright Frame

Two vertical columns connected by horizontal + diagonal bracing. Includes pre-punched slots at 50/75mm pitch for beam connection. Roll-formed from Q345B steel; gauge selected per load and height.

02

Load Beam

Horizontal box-section profile that spans between upright frames and supports the pallets. End connectors with safety lock pins. Box-beam profile gives high bending resistance and torsional rigidity.

03

Baseplate

Welded steel plate at the foot of each upright column. Includes anchor holes for floor-bolt fixing per EN 15512 / AS 4084 anchorage standards. Distributes column load to the floor slab.

04

Beam End Connector

Forged or stamped end plate that engages the upright slot pattern. Designed for shear and moment capacity per FEM 10.2.02; locks beams to the upright without welding.

05

Safety Lock Pin

Drop-in safety pin that prevents accidental beam dislodgement from forklift uplift. Spring-loaded design — installs without tools, removable for reconfiguration.

06

Wire Mesh Deck

Optional welded-wire deck panel sits on top of the beams to support irregular pallets or piece-pick. Open-mesh design preserves sprinkler effectiveness and visibility.

07

Steel Panel Deck

Optional solid steel deck panel — used when storing small parts, drums or items prone to falling through wire mesh. Available in galvanised or powder-coated finish.

08

Column Guard

Bolt-on or anchored impact guard that protects the upright base from forklift collision. Painted yellow per OSHA / EN 15635 visibility guidelines.

09

Row Spacer

Horizontal bracing that connects back-to-back row pairs at the top — adds lateral rigidity and maintains correct aisle width over the rack lifecycle.

10

Pallet Stopper

Bolt-on rear-edge stopper that prevents pallets from being pushed off the back of the rack during placement. Critical for double-stacked rear-aisle layouts.

📐 Design Guide

How to Specify a Selective Pallet Rack Layout in 3 Decisions

A simple decision tree your warehouse planner can complete in 30 minutes. Aisle width, beam level pitch, and bay configuration drive 80% of the total project cost — get these three right before you size uprights.

1

Aisle Width — Forklift Class First

Match aisle to the forklift you already own (or plan to lease). Wider aisles cost more floor area; narrower aisles cost more forklift capex.

  • Counterbalance — 3.6–4.2 m aisle
  • Reach truck — 2.7–3.2 m aisle
  • Articulated (Bendi/Flexi) — 1.8–2.0 m
  • VNA turret — 1.5–1.7 m + wire guidance
2

Beam Pitch — Pallet Height + 150 mm

Vertical clearance between top of pallet and underside of next beam should be ≥150 mm for safe pallet entry. Optimal beam levels = (clear height − floor clearance) ÷ (pallet+150).

  • 1.2 m pallet — 1.35 m beam pitch
  • 1.5 m pallet — 1.65 m beam pitch
  • 1.8 m pallet — 1.95 m beam pitch
  • Mixed → use universal step holes @50 mm
3

Bay Width — Pallets per Beam Level

Standard bays hold 2 or 3 EUR/US pallets per level. Always leave 75–100 mm flue between pallet edges and uprights for fork tine clearance.

  • 2× EUR (1200×800) — 2,700 mm bay
  • 3× EUR (1200×800) — 3,900 mm bay
  • 2× US (1219×1016) — 2,750 mm bay
  • 2× CHEP (1165×1165) — 2,700 mm bay
📊 Aisle Width vs Storage Density (10 m × 50 m bay area)Higher density = more upfront forklift cost

Best ForMixed SKUs, <500 pal/SKUBulk single-SKUMedium SKU countLand-constrained sitesFIFO + density combo
✅ Pick Selective When…

Mixed SKU, FIFO, fast picking

You have 500+ SKUs, need 100% direct pallet access, want the lowest capex per position, and your forklift fleet is standard counterbalance or reach trucks.

⚠️ Avoid Selective When…

Single SKU bulk, >90% cube fill

You store 50,000 pallets of identical FMCG and selectivity does not matter — drive-in or radio shuttle will save 40–55% floor area.

🔁 Selective + Double-Deep Combo

3PLs and e-commerce DCs

Use double-deep for slow-mover reserve, selective for pick face. 35% denser than pure selective with only 15% extra forklift cost.

🏗️ Selective + VNA Combo

Tight urban land, tall building

When floor area costs $200+/m²/yr, go 12 m high with VNA aisles — 2× the density of standard selective on the same footprint.

How AME Rack Builds Selective Pallet Racks — 6-Step Production Flow

Owned 15,500 m² Dongguan factory. Steel coil enters one end, container-loaded racking exits the other. Every step in-house — no outsourcing, no hidden margins.

Step 1 🛠️

CNC Punching & Cutting

4 high-speed CNC punching lines (Amada / Yawei) cut and perforate uprights from 2.0–3.0 mm Q235B / Q345B cold-rolled steel coil. Hole pattern: universal 50-mm step / EN 15512 slot. Tolerance ±0.15 mm.

Step 2 🌀

Roll-Forming

15 parallel roll-forming lines run continuously for upright sections (Ω, C, M profile) and step beams (box, structural). Each line is dedicated to one cross-section to avoid changeover delay — that is why our standard lead time is 20–25 days.

Step 3

Robotic Welding

Panasonic / Yaskawa robotic MIG welding for upright frame assembly (uprights + horizontal/diagonal bracing). Full-perimeter weld for beam end-connector to box-beam. All welds inspected per ISO 5817 Class B.

Step 4 🧪

Acid Pickling & Phosphating

Steel components run through 7-stage pre-treatment line: alkaline degrease → water rinse → acid pickle → water rinse → phosphate (zinc-phosphate base coat) → water rinse → DI rinse. Surface preparation directly affects powder-coat adhesion (≥6N/cm cross-cut test).

Step 5 🎨

Electrostatic Powder Coating

Tunnel oven with electrostatic spray booth — 60–100 μm DFT epoxy-polyester powder. Standard colours: AME Rack orange, traffic blue (RAL 5017), traffic yellow (RAL 1023), pure white (RAL 9010), signal grey (RAL 7004). HDG 80–120 μm available for cold/wet environments.

Step 6 📦

QC, Bundling & Container Loading

Final dimensional QC (random 10% sample), beam load test per EN 15512 (random 1 per 100 batches), bundled with steel strapping + corner protectors. Direct loading into 20GP/40HQ containers — average 1,800–2,200 pallet positions per 40HQ.

❓ FAQ — B2B Procurement

15 Procurement Questions Buyers Ask Before Placing a Selective Pallet Rack Order

Answered for facility managers, supply chain heads, and procurement officers comparing 3–5 racking suppliers. If your question is not covered, WhatsApp Lily at +86 188 2453 7792.

01What is the MOQ for selective pallet racking — can I order less than a full container?
Standard MOQ is one 20GP container (≈ 600 pallet positions). Smaller orders are accepted but carry a 12–18% loading-inefficiency surcharge. If your project is below MOQ, we can combine your shipment with another customer's container to the same destination port — ask us at quote stage.
02How long is the lead time from PO to ready-for-shipment?
Standard powder-coated selective: 20–25 days after deposit received. Hot-dip galvanised (cold storage): 30–35 days. 304 stainless: 40–45 days. We dedicate one of 15 roll-forming lines per project to avoid changeover delay — that is why lead time is shorter than the industry average.
03What payment terms do you accept for B2B buyers?
Standard terms: 30% T/T deposit on PO confirmation, 70% balance against B/L copy before vessel sails. Alternative: 100% irrevocable L/C at sight from a top-50 bank. For repeat customers with 3+ orders, we also offer OA 30/60 against credit insurance (Sinosure / Coface).
04Which Incoterms do you support — and which is most economical?
We quote FOB / EXW / CIF / DAP / DDP. FOB Shenzhen / Yantian / Nansha is the most common and usually most economical for buyers who already have a freight forwarder. We also handle DDP for customers in North America, EU and Middle East — useful if you do not have an import licence or customs broker.
05Is your racking compliant with EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI MH16?
Yes. All our selective pallet rack designs are engineered to EN 15512 (Europe), AS 4084 (Australia/NZ) and RMI MH16.1 / ANSI MH16.1 (US/Canada). We provide stamped FEA calculation reports on request — required by most insurance providers and many municipal building codes.
06What steel grade do you use and where is it sourced?
Standard: Q235B cold-rolled coil (yield ≥235 MPa). Heavy-duty / seismic / cold-storage: Q345B (yield ≥345 MPa, Charpy V-notch impact ≥27J at -40°C). Steel is sourced from Tier-1 Chinese mills (Baosteel, Shagang, Hesteel) under annual contracts — full mill test certificates (MTC) provided with every shipment.
07Can you produce custom upright profiles and beam lengths?
Yes. Standard upright depths: 76 / 90 / 100 / 120 mm. Custom depths from 60 mm up to 140 mm available with one-time tooling fee (typically waived above 10 × 40HQ orders). Beam lengths fully custom from 1,500–3,900 mm. Custom hole patterns require 5 working days additional lead time.
08Do you provide installation drawings, FEA reports, and on-site supervision?
Drawings + FEA: free with every order (3D AutoCAD / Revit / IFC, plus full stamped calculation report). On-site supervision: optional at USD 250/day + travel/visa. For projects over 5,000 pallet positions or in seismic zones, we strongly recommend at least one supervisor for the first 7 days of installation.
09What is your warranty policy and what does it cover?
10-year structural warranty on the steel frame (uprights, beams, baseplates, bracing) against material defect and weld failure under normal operating conditions. 5-year coating warranty against blistering, peeling and through-corrosion in indoor ambient conditions. Forklift impact damage is excluded — but replacement parts ship within 14 days.
10Can you OEM with our brand logo and neutral packaging?
Yes. OEM / private-label available from 5 × 40HQ containers per order. We can powder-coat your logo or RAL colour, supply neutral cartons without AME Rack branding, and ship using your custom shipping marks. Service is free above 5 containers; below threshold, USD 800 setup fee applies.
11How much cheaper are you than European / North American brands?
For equivalent EN 15512 / AS 4084 / RMI spec, direct factory pricing is typically 30–45% below European brand-name suppliers (SSI Schäfer, Mecalux, Stow, Polypal) and 25–35% below North American brands (Steel King, Interlake, Frazier). We own the 15,500 m² plant outright and procure steel via annual mill contracts — no trader margin, no distributor margin.
12How is the racking packaged for ocean shipping — and what about damage?
Components are bundled with steel strapping, edge corner-protected, and direct-loaded into 20GP/40HQ containers — no pallet. Average 1,800–2,200 pallet positions per 40HQ. Shipment damage rate is under 0.3% historically; if damage occurs in transit, we ship replacement parts free of charge after photo verification.
13Can you handle seismic-zone engineering (UBC / IBC / NCh 2369 / SBC)?
Yes. We have completed projects in Chile (NCh 2369), Mexico (NTC-DS), Indonesia (SNI 1726), Saudi Arabia (SBC 301), Philippines (NSCP), Peru (E.030) and US zones (IBC). FEA reports are run in dedicated structural software (RFEM 5 / ETABS) and stamped by registered PE on request.
14Do you supply matching accessories — wire deck, column guards, pallet supports?
Yes. We supply the full accessory range in-house: 50×100 mm wire deck (welded), 16-gauge steel deck, pallet support bars, end-of-aisle column guards (yellow powder coat or HDG), upright protectors, row spacers, pallet stoppers, flue spacers, anchors and shims. All accessories ship in the same container.
15What after-sales support do you provide for international buyers?
Free part list with every order for future expansion (3-year price-lock on commodity components). Spare-parts shipment within 14 days by air or sea. Re-engineering service if you reconfigure your warehouse — we update your FEA report and drawings free for 3 years post-installation. WhatsApp / email response within 4 working hours, Mon–Sat.
